The Journey
Dr. Thomas N. Bogart, a prominent physician and surgeon of Excelsior Springs, is a native of Missouri. He lived here in Excelsior Springs, where he engaged in the practice of his profession, with marked success, giving special attention to diseases of the kidneys. In 1906 and 1907, he went to Europe and took special courses in Vienna, and while in Europe, he visited a health resort called Carlsbad, as well as other celebrated springs. This was proven of inestimable value to him in the study of the waters of Excelsior Springs. Dr. Bogart’s work contributed to the tourism that began in Excelsior Springs with the claims of the healing properties of the spring water. The east side of the building was built by Dr. Thomas N. Bogart in 1909 after the original burned down in 1908.
In 1929, Herbert Hope purchased the building and built an addition. A large building with a second floor was constructed on the corner of Thompson and Spring with a breezeway connecting the two buildings. He located the same stone mason that had done the work for Dr. Bogart to do the work. It features random ashlar quarry-faced limestone, with larger stones at the corners serving as quoins. Interrupting the ashlar are large, irregularly shaped stones which feature a rougher quarry-face. On the gable end of the east building, the roof edge has a course of small, square cut stones with a large, rough triangle stone at the peak. The window sills also feature a course of small, square stones and the window lintels have narrow, vertical stones with triangular pieces at each corner and as a keystone. This is also found in the round window on Dr. Bogart’s original home.
The 216 Springs Street building has had a handful of different owners, however, it has been unoccupied for over 20 years. In December 2019, Susan purchased the building. Due to the pandemic, renovations didn't begin until Spring of 2021 and concluded in 2022.
